A
GRADE PREMIERS
Congratulations
to Leigh Edwards and the A Grade
team on a magnificent victory over Melton
Centrals in the WSUCCA premier division,
A Matting.
Melton South
batting first made 342 losing our last
wicket on the second last ball of the
day. Dale McLeod led the attack
brilliantly with a magnificent 140 runs
which included 14 fours and 7 sixes. Dale
was well supported with an even spread
of contributions, Darren Beckett
48 (his first runs in a grand final),
Richard Catlin 38, Michael Garwood
25, Brad Tomlinson 22 and Chris
Camenzuli 20.
South got
off to a great start on Day 2 with opening
bowlers Clinton Ivory and Steve
Medhurst each picking up an early
wicket to have Centrals on the back foot
at 2/19. Centrals then battled hard with
a couple of reasonable partnerships saw
them reach 4/112 at tea and close to the
situation South was in on Day 1 at the
same stage. However South's bowling and
fielding continued to build the pressure
on Centrals and finally grab the rewards
of their hard work taking Centrals last
6 wickets for only 23 runs. Best of our
bowlers was Darren Beckett with
4/37 and Chris Camenzuli with 3/32.
Clinton Ivory, Dominic Grero
and Steve Medhurst each picked
up one wicket.
B
GRADE GO DOWN FIGHTING IN FINAL
Melton South's
third XI led by Andrew Axford fell
agonisingly short in their huge run chase
against Melton Centrals in the WSUCCA
B Grade grand final.
Centrals
won the toss on day 1 electing to bat
and amassed a formidable 8/312cc in their
allotted 72 overs. The best of South's
bowlers were Mitchell Woodyard
2/23 and Michael Mammone 2/55,
Dean Pirro, Dave Kilmartin,
Michael Taylor and Andrew Axford
each picked up one wicket.
In reply
on day2 Melton South advanced steadily
towards the target with with Josh Joy
107 and Andrew Axford 54 adding
153 for the second wicket before Andrew
was dismissed with the score at 168. Unfortunately
a steady stream of wickets fell in pursuit
of the remaining 145 runs needed with
a run rate of about 6 runs per over. South's
chase ended in the 69th over being dismissed
for 295 and going down by just 17 runs.
Of the other batsmen Glenn Axford
26, Dave Kilmartin 22no and
Zac Giblett 21 were the main contributors.
Congratulations
boys on a great season particularly given
the move up one grade during the year.
